We all dream of dropping everything and traveling around the world, but the weak dollar and the cost of plane tickets is making some of us think twice about that global adventure. But all is not lost. Fortunately your money is still worth plenty in the USA, and you don’t have to go far to feel far away (saving you a pretty penny on gas prices too).
Big Trip Winner
I've spent the time struggling to learn Spanish, staring open-mouthed at glorious mountain vistas and towering Mayan ruins, snorkeling in the Caribbean or surfing in the Pacific, or maybe just catching an extravagently decorated chicken bus, so named because it carries not just never-ending packed rows of passengers but also the occasional boxes of live chickens for market. HI-Martha’s Vineyard Gets Solar Shower
Visitors to HI-Martha’s Vineyard can now bathe in solar-heated water. A 3’ by 8’ collector has been attached to the roof of the Hostel’s bike shed, and heats water for the nearby outdoor shower.
35th Annual Midnight Madness Fun Bicycle Ride
Midnight Madness offers one of the most scenic 20 mile routes for bicyclists anywhere. Cycling around Harbor Island and Shelter Island offers riders unique and spectacular views of downtown San Diego. And of course the ride wouldn't be the same without the crazy contests!! The REI Light the Bike and Alaska Airlines Costume Contest brings out the creative and fun side of bicyclists. Adventures in Hostelling
In honor of our 50th anniversary, the Golden Gate Council of Hostelling International USA is seeking short, personal stories (150-250 words) about how the experience of staying at a hostel has broadened your horizons, changed your perspective, or otherwise enriched your life. we’re looking for stories that help to demonstrate the breadth of experiences made possible by hostelling, or that illustrate the Council’s mission to help travelers "gain a greater understanding of the world and its people through hostelling." Germany on a ShoestringAs the world’s third-largest economy and Europe’s most prosperous country, Germany may not seem like a budget traveler’s paradise. And on some levels, it’s not—the price of food and entertainment is high, and transportation can be pricey. But don’t let the challenge of budget travel to Germany deter you. Deutschland abounds in freebies and hidden deals, and with a little bit of effort (and some help from Let’s Go) you can see more of the country for less of your cash. Americian Airlines
