Bicycles and hostels naturally go together, so the HI-Portland, Hawthorne District Hostel's annual Bike-In Movie night must be a match made in heaven! This year the movie night will happen on Friday June 25th, 2010 at 7pm.
The Bike-In Movie is a community event we've put on since 2004. It's part of PedalPalooza, sponsored by the non-profit group Shift to Bikes. PedalPalooza is an annual bicycle festival, the largest event of its kind in the United States. Spanning two and a half weeks from June 10 to June 26, this event features many bicycle related events all put together by members of the community. Last year’s festival had almost 200 events over the span of 17 days, averaging almost 13 events a day, with participation in the thousands! This year should promise even more events.
This year we're showing "The Cross Canada Project", a documentary about Mike Beauchamp's 2005 Canadian bicycling odyssey. Using a specially designed weatherproof camera mounted to his bicycle, Beauchamp is able to film himself without interruption in all conditions as he rides his bicycle over 7,000 KM across Canada from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean. We'll also be screening the "Velo Vixens" documentary by Lauren Warbeck, which is about Victoria B.C.'s female bicycle dance troupe.
Before the movie, we feature live music, this year provided by Constantina. And there's also free food, donated by Turtle Island/Tofurky and Nature Bake/Dave's Killer Bread. Oh-and did I mention we show this outdoors on our spacious side lawn?
The Bike-In Movie is our biggest annual event at the Hawthorne Hostel. Last year we had 200 people, and expect as many or more this year. Hope to see you there!

In July, the second of HI TA's four bike tours will be held in the Toledo area. The Metroparks Tour, July 17, is one of two tours in partnership with Metroparks of the Toledo Area, a regional park district.
The bike tours are significant fundraisers and "friend-raisers" for the council, which represents HI members in northwest Ohio and neighboring communities in Michigan. For a complete list of tours, and brochures for each, please visit www.hitoledo.org.
