Educational Programs Manager - HI-USA Golden Gate Council
Founded in 1958, the Golden Gate Council of Hostelling International USA is a nonprofit network of 10 affordable accommodations providing top-quality service, cleanliness, and security to guests in San Francisco, Sacramento, and other scenic Northern California locations. For more than four decades, HI-USA Golden Gate Council has also provided educational programs which encourage environmental exploration and cultural exchange for people of all ages.
The Educational Programs Manager is responsible for the management, supervision, and growth of the Golden Gate Council’s educational programs. The Educational Programs Manager works cooperatively with hostel managers, and other program staff and volunteers, and reports to the Executive Director.
RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES
- Recruit and train program staff, interns, and volunteers
- Provide daily supervision of staff, including goal setting, assessment, coaching, and provision of staff development opportunities
- Plan and coordinate yearly programming calendar
- Oversee the development of program curricula, activities, and evaluation of all programs
- Ensure program participant growth through targeted campaigns
- Perform outreach to Bay Area schools and community groups
- Coordinate and implement program marketing in cooperation with Council Marketing Manager
- Lead day and overnight trips for school and youth groups to Bay Area hostels
- Conduct pre-trip classroom presentations
- Manage Educational Programs budget
- Write articles for newsletters and brochures that publicize programs
- Grant writing and management
- Special event planning
- Additional duties as assigned by the Executive Director
QUALIFICATIONS
- College degree or equivalent
- Management experience required (at least 3 years), including management of budgets, staff supervision, and program development
- Prior experience working with youth of all ages (especially lower-income inner-city youth)
- Outdoor education: knowledge and experience in implementing a wide range of educational activities including ecological concepts, team building, and intercultural and environmental awareness
- Grant writing and fundraising experience
- Hostelling experience preferred
- Bilingual preferred

- Excellent communication skills and ability to work cooperatively with others
- Self-starter and motivated; able to work independently
- Energetic, organized person who is passionate about enriching and expanding the communities of urban youth
- Detail-oriented, while holding a grand vision
- Knowledge of cultural and global awareness activities preferred
SALARY AND BENEFITS
Competitive salary commensurate with experience. This is a full-time, exempt position. Benefits include liberal vacation and sick leave, and comprehensive health insurance package.

Hostel Assistant II - HI-Pigeon Point Lighthouse
The Pigeon Point Lighthouse Hostel has 52 beds in dormitory-style and private rooms. The hostel serves 12,000 educational and recreational travelers annually, and is home to an environmental education program for school children that operates six months a year.
Responsibilities
- Welcome, register, orient, and supervise guests.
- Maintain security and safety of the hostel and personal belongings of guests.
- Represent Hostelling International USA, the hostel, and California State Parks in a positive manner to guests, callers, local officials, and the general public.
- Provide information about HI-USA, the hostel, and the local area to guests in person, over the phone, and in writing.
- Collect and accurately record overnight fees and sales of goods.
- Assign and supervise daily housekeeping chores.
- Clean hostel buildings including daily chores and deep cleaning.
- Additional duties include: building maintenance, bookkeeping, reservations, gardening, lighthouse tours, hot tub maintenance, inventory, stocking, and supplies purchasing.
- Provide on-call assistance in emergencies any time while on the hostel premises.
- Actively support the mission and goals of HI-USA.
- Other duties assigned by the Hostel Manager and/or Executive Director.
Qualifications
- Must have customer service experience and enjoy working with the public.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Experience handling cash and credit cards, and recording sales transactions.
- Accurate, neat, and thorough record-keeping.
- House and/or hospitality cleaning experience.
- Conflict resolution skills and ability to act effectively in a crisis.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively without immediate supervision.
- Must be flexible regarding work schedule: Working evenings, early mornings, overnight on-call duty, holidays, and weekends may be required.
- First aid and CPR certification preferred (training can be provided).
- Computer skills (word processing, email, hospitality registration, and database management) desirable.
- Hostelling experience desirable.
Reports to: Hostel Manager
Salary, Benefits, and Hours
32-40 hours per week. housing may be provided. The wage range is $7.62 - $8.71 per hour for live-in, or $9.12 - $10.04 per hour if living off site. Liberal benefits include vacation, holiday, and sick pay, as well as dental, health, vision, chiropractic, and acupuncture insurance.
