Live-Out Hostel Assistant
HI-Point Montara Lighthouse
HI-Point Montara Lighthouse is a 50-bed hostel providing low-cost, short-term overnight accommodations for over 9,500 educational and recreational travelers each year. Additionally, the lighthouse has over 10,000 visitors each year. It is based at a State Park Historic site on the beautiful San Mateo coast, just south of San Francisco and north of Half Moon Bay.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Take individual and group reservations by telephone, email, and an online system
- Assist in the organizing and processing of group reservations
- Welcome, register, orient, and supervise guests
- Maintain security and safety of the hostel and personal belongings of guests
- Represent and promote Hostelling International USA and the hostel in a positive manner to guests, callers, local officials, and the general public
- Provide information about HI-USA, the hostel, and the local area to guests in person, over the telephone, and via email
- Update daily availability on recorded voice system
- Collect and accurately record overnight fees, sale of goods, and equipment rentals using a Window-based, computerized, registration system
- Provide espresso bar service to guests during open hours
- Maintain online reservation allotments
- Assist in the planning and implementation of special events and fundraising
- Provide group orientations; assign and supervise group clean-up and check-out
- Extensive housekeeping duties including the daily cleaning of the hostel
- Provide on-call assistance in emergencies any time while on the hostel premises
- Additional duties in one or more of the following areas: cleaning, building, maintenance, bookkeeping, reservations, gardening, and/or supplies purchasing and stocking

Hostel Assistant II
HI-Marin Headlands
Love hostelling? Would you like to help others discover the value and friendly atmosphere offered by HI hostels around the world? HI-USA Golden Gate Council of is looking for a Hostel Assistant for its Marin Headlands Hostel, located in a coastal National Park just north of the Golden Gate Bridge.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide a welcoming atmosphere, while maintaining a clean and secure facility
- Deliver Hostelling International and National Park missions in a positive manner
- Take reservations for guests by phone, e-mail, and an online system
- Orient guests to the hostel and local area; assist in planning trips
- Collect and accurately record overnight fees and sales of goods
- Provide emergency assistance when needed
- Clean the hostel
- Help with special events, educational programs, light maintenance, and other hostel projects
- Other duties assigned by the Hostel General Manager and Deputy Manager
QUALIFICATIONS
- Strong customer service background essential

HOURS
24-32 hours per week. Occasionally staff must work a 40-hour week in order to cover another staff's vacation. Hostel Assistants work a combination of both desk and cleaning shifts. This position necessitates work in early mornings, late evenings, weekends, holidays, and on-site/on-call overnight duties.
WAGE AND BENEFITS
$8 per hour/live-in (wage differential for live-out).
As part of their compensation, HAII employees are offered housing (a wage differential is provided for live-out staff). The hostel consists of two federally owned historical buildings under the jurisdiction of the National Park Service. Because of this, the HAII must be willing to follow the rules of safety and sanitation dictated by Hostelling International and the NPS.
Staff members are eligible to receive health benefits including medical, dental, vision, chiropractic, and acupuncture. These benefits are prorated to the number of hours worked per week.

Hostel Assistant II
HI-Pigeon Point Lighthouse
HI-Pigeon Point Lighthouse has 52 beds in dormitory-style and private rooms. The hostel serves 12,000 educational and recreational travelers annually, and is home to an environmental education program for school children that operates six months a year.
RESPONSIBILITIES

Organization Description
Hostelling International Chicago is seeking a full time Activities Coordinator. This position is a great career opportunity for anyone working in hospitality, volunteer management or nonprofit programming. Good candidates will be experienced travelers, preferably with hostelling experience, who are organized, detail oriented, fun, enthusiastic and highly motivated.
Hostelling International Chicago is a nonprofit hostel located in downtown Chicago at 24 East Congress Parkway and is one of the world’s best hostels. We were rated by travelers as the Best Large Hostel Worldwide 2006 & 2007. Located in a seven-story structure, the hostel offers 500 beds in the summer and 250 during the academic year. Travelers come to the hostel from every corner of the globe. Our mission is “to help all, especially the young, gain a greater understanding of the world and its people through hostelling.”
This position is central to achieving a high level of customer satisfaction and to the overall success of the hostel in Chicago, which is owned and operated by Hostelling International USA.
Position Summary
To plan, schedule, promote, monitor, and evaluate all hostel activities within budget and safety guidelines. This position dedicates a large amount of time to guest interaction and participation in hostel activities; you will be expected to be one of the most visible staff members to guests. Activities will be used to create a unique vibe that is appreciated by our core market – 18 -29 year olds.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Oversee a weekly schedule of traveler activities both in the hostel and throughout Chicago.
- Administer a Welcome and Information Center; including a volunteer supported information desk and local information resources.
- Coordinate the weekly updating of the hostel and community “What’s Happening” list, assuring that the hostel announcement boards are being updated daily and coordinating the morning breakfast “What’s Up” announcements.
- Coordinate the annual renewal of the membership and traveler discount partners.
- Maintain guest travel library and sharing resources.
- Attend hostel activities on a regular basis to assure volunteer and staff leaders have the necessary support and training to facilitate quality activities.
- Work with Group Sales staff to offer group itinerary planning both as established options and creative options on an as needed basis.
- Development and volunteer training for city walking tours
- Manage updates and traveler information on hichicago.org
- Coordinate ongoing process of “Greening of HI-Chicago” and review progress consistent with national efforts
- Perform follow-up evaluations for activity content and hosteller/participant satisfaction through the use of standard evaluation tools.
- Communicate and market activities to staff, hostel guests and local community as appropriate.
- Confer with management on matters of size, scope and financing of activities.
- Prepare operation reports for activities and submit to management at the end of each month to include attendance information and recommendations for future plans.
- Implement improvements and changes to existing activities by monitoring and comparing quality on an ongoing basis.
- Act as lead staff for all special events and social functions.
- Other duties may be assigned as needed.
Volunteer Coordinator Responsibilities:
- Maintain volunteer job and project descriptions and other information that describes opportunities available.
- Recruit, interview, select, train, supervise and recognize volunteers necessary to meet program and activity needs.
- Coordination of recruitment for interns, including job fairs, online listings, interview process, and project lists
- Screening of volunteers for community-based education programming
- Maintain recruitment listings at volunteermatch.org, idealist.org and other websites associated with volunteer recruitment.
- Respond to any inquiries regarding volunteer opportunities or the volunteer program.
- Coordinate and oversee volunteer orientation, training, evaluation and ongoing development to ensure consistent, quality experiences for participants and volunteers.
- Serve as the main contact for volunteers.
- Maintain database of volunteer names, addresses, interests and scope of involvement.
- Maintain a system for scheduling and tracking of volunteer hours.
- Provide volunteer participation reporting to various groups.
- Coordinate activities that promote the retention of volunteers.
- Other responsibilities may be assigned as needed.
Qualifications:
- Highly organized and self-motivated with a positive, out-going and enthusiastic attitude along with a strong respect for the varied cultural differences among our travelers
- Strong leadership skills, self-assured and assertive with an ability and willingness to motivate others
- International travel experience with an international youth exchange component preferred
- Minimum education required is completion of an accredited 4-year undergraduate degree.
- Flexible hours and days as needed for traveler activities, hostel events, workshops, volunteer recognition events and supervision of volunteer-led evening excursions
- Previous experience delivering and/or scheduling activities preferably in a young-adult setting
- Excellent communication skills
- Confidence in working with large numbers of people, with an ability to keep a positive attitude in stressful situations
- Socially engaging and energetic
- Customer service experience; comfortable and confident dealing with some conflict resolution
- Supervisory experience and administrative experience are assets
- Experience working with Microsoft Office, some graphic design experience an asset

Development Manager
Hostelling International seeks a highly motivated individual to serve as Development Manager. This is a mid-level position that works directly with the CEO to cultivate individual donor gifts and corporate/foundation support for programs and facilities.
HI-USA is a nonprofit educational organization with a mission to “help all, especially the young, gain a greater understanding of the world and its people through hostelling”. It has an annual budget of about $19 million and a national staff of 25, with 160 other employees based at six large youth hostels in major cities. Seventy additional hostels are operated by local chapters and licensees to deliver the HI-USA mission.
2009 is the 75th Anniversary Year for HI-USA. This position will support at the HI-USA National Office a multi-faceted outreach and cultivation campaign. It is a terrific opportunity to gain broad fundraising knowledge.

Responsibilities

Hostel General Manager
Chamounix Mansion, Philadelphia, PA
Chamounix Mansion, the first urban youth hostel in the United States, is located in the heart of Philadelphia's Fairmount Park. Originally built in 1802 as a country home, the Mansion rests on a scenic bluff above the Schuylkill River and is convenient to Philadelphia's cultural and historic attractions, sporting events, and restaurants. Chamounix (CHAM'-ah-nee) Mansion provides clean, inexpensive accommodations for individuals, families, and groups. The restored and handicappedaccessible Carriage House is an ideal facility for group accommodation. The hostel also offers meeting rooms with kitchen/dining areas for workshops, retreats, and events.
The hostel general manager is a full-time, permanent employee who is responsible for all facets of the operation of the hostel, both day-to-day and long-range, in accordance with the purpose, goals, and policies of the Board of Directors of the Friends of Chamounix Mansion. As a condition of employment, the general manager resides in a two-story, five room cottage on the grounds of Chamounix Mansion. The general manager is supported by a staff of two full-time assistant managers and a part-time housekeeper. The responsibilities of general manager include marketing, maintaining high quality service to guests including a friendly and welcoming atmosphere, an efficient reservation system, consistent cleanliness of facilities, and security of buildings. Office Manager (Part-time)
Potomac Area Council (PAC) is seeking an energetic individual to manage the administrative matters of this growing Council headquartered in Washington, DC. PAC owns and operates the HI-Baltimore and HI-Harpers Ferry hostels and is also a part-owner of the HI-Washington, DC hostel. This job is expected to be 20 hours per week. This individual will report to the Treasurer.
Responsibilities:
- Receive correspondence (electronic and postal) and highlight issues that need to be addressed to the appropriate officers
- Interface with payroll service provider in submitting hours and salaries and making sure that the checks are received by employees on time
- Provide administrative support to PAC hostel managers as needed for invoice payments, petty cash reimbursements and computer support
- Interface with HI-USA to submit the quarterly reports, membership sales, merchandise orders and reimbursement requests
- Record all financial transactions in Quickbooks® software. Generate financial reports as required. Generate checks as required for signatures by officers
- Receive monthly reports from hostels and generate tax payments to local governments as required
- Maintain the Council website and all records up to date
- May require occasional travel to the hostels and attendance at the Board meetings
Qualifications (Required):
- Previous administrative experience (two to five years minimum)
